In an attempt to introduce the dying kimono art to young generation, a Japanese designer has created cases for Apple Inc.?s iPad tablet computers from kimono fabric. The iPad cases designed by Nobuaki Tomita have features like good quality kimono fabric and durability. The designer has chosen the fabric that is used for making kimono sashes put on by "maiko" apprentice geisha. The cases are unveiled in 12 designs. One of the designs has cherry flowers and a spinning wheel against a black background. Another design features bamboo set and apricots against a vermilion background. These cases are expected to be offered online next month. Earlier, Tomita had designed bathing suits using a variation of the Kyo Yuzen dyeing technique that is endangered due to lack of artisans. Tomita wants to save the true tradition of kimono, which is endangered due to declining popularity and death of artisans knowing the technique. | | | | |
