AN ERA HAS ENDED

In the final moments of Benedict XVI's papacy, the church bells began ringing.

It was 8 p.m. in the Italian hill town of Castel Gandolfo, 8 p.m. in the Vatican, 8 p.m. across Italy ? the chosen time on the chosen day that the one who was chosen decided to retire.

Both Swiss Guards flanked the elegant 20-foot doorway leading into the papal palace in the town. One of them saluted an official. From the crowd ? about 100 well-wishers who braved the freezing temperatures with their children and their dogs ? shouts rang out.

"Long live the pope!"

With precise movements, the guards marched into the palace. The massive wooden doors began closing shut, first one side, then the other. The crowd was applauding, sighing, shivering.

And with the click of a lock, Pope Benedict XVI's eight-year reign as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics came to a quiet end.

A critical voice about Benedict as the doors close on his papacy:

As she left St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square in New Orleans' French Quarter, Cheryl Hribar snapped a picture of the long aisle and altar of the city's most famous church and posted it to her Facebook page. Hribar, a Catholic from Lorain, Ohio, says she's been uneasy about the state of the church and hopes a new pope can change that.

"Pope Benedict took us backward," she says. "He wasn't progressive enough. This is 2013. Let's move on, move ahead and do more to reach our young people and get them back in church. We need someone who will do something strong and positive."

CARDINAL PLANS

Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley says he hadn't been planning any particular observation for the 8 p.m. hour when the pope officially resigned. O'Malley said the more significant moments for him were when the cardinals gathered with Benedict Thursday morning. "And watching him leave for Castel Gandolfo. There was a certain moment of finality in that."

But the 8 o'clock hour? Dinner with friends, probably. "Pretty prosaic," O'Malley says.

Cardinal Francis George of Chicago told reporters at the Pontifical North American College he would say a prayer "that the Holy Spirit will guide us" as the cardinals set about the process of choosing a new pope, most likely from among their ranks.

Then George joked: "I might walk quietly through the corridors here to find out if I get any more deference from the seminarians."

PRAYERS IN NYC

In New York City, the Rev. Moses Mary Apreku says Benedict XVI was right to resign if the work had become too onerous. "To me, it's something that the church should really accept, and thank him for his courage and pray for him," Apreku says.

The 40-year-old Apreku is from Ghana, the West African Nation where one of his seminary teachers was Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, considered a contender to become the next pope. Apreku celebrated Mass today for two dozen worshippers scattered around St. Michael's Church in midtown Manhattan, which has room for hundreds.

Apreku says Turkson would make a good pope ? but he's not rooting for him just because they're both from Ghana.

Huge anticipation is building in Castel Gandolfo.

Both Swiss Guards are standing at attention at the 20-foot high doors to the papal palace.

Only 100 or so townspeople have come back out, some with children, others with their dogs. Most are quiet but light-hearted, waiting for history to be made as Benedict becomes the first pope in 600 years to retire.

'A LITTLE CONCERNED'

A long banner with a picture of a waving Pope Benedict XVI hangs from an iron fence outside St. Patrick's Catholic Church, one of the oldest in New Orleans, where traditions like Mardi Gras stem from Catholic roots.

But not everyone was supportive of his decision to step down.

"You can't help but feel emotional today, and maybe a little concerned," said Manolito Martinez, 42, who has attended St. Patrick's since childhood and now serves as the maintenance supervisor. "We're in peril times, with all these allegations, and my opinion is he should have endured this position until the end."

On a receiving table just inside the church, the faithful were invited to take prayer cards with a picture of the resigning pope. The prayer on the reverse side included a note of thanks and hope for the Church's next leader.

COMMENTS FROM PROVIDENCE

In Rhode Island, one of the nation's most Catholic states, several hundred people packed the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence for a noontime mass said by Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Diocese of Providence. The cathedral was filled to capacity with Catholic-school students in their uniforms, professionals in suits and people wearing jeans.

Tobin called the pope's resignation historic, humble and courageous, and says he resigned because of his love for the Roman Catholic Church. He called Benedict a pilgrim, a prophet and a bridge-builder and used a sports analogy to describe his time as pope.

"Pope Benedict left everything on the field," Tobin says.

And then this from Liz Ricci of East Providence, R.I., who says she left the Church for a number of years but had come back: "I just think the Lord's got the whole thing under control."

READING ABOUT A LIFE

Robei George, 7, sat on a pew at the Cathedral of Saint Mary just north of Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood. He had a black shirt with the words "Pope Benedict XVI" written in white. In his hand, he carried a photo of the pontiff taped to a ruler.

Fifteen minutes before the pope's resignation officially goes into effect, George will walk with a half dozen students to the front of the church. They will hold up his picture and read about his life.

"I'm nervous," George admitted.

He and other children here are disappointed the pope is resigning.

"I was in love with the pope," said Maria Quant, 13. "He taught me how to be holier."

After the readings, the students will say a prayer to guide the selection of a new pope and blow out a candle.

SAINT ONE DAY?

In Chicago, some Catholics attending Mass at St. Alphonsus Church on the city's North Side ? a church founded as a German national parish more than a century ago and the only church in the city that still occasionally celebrates Mass in German ? say they are saddened by the pope's decision to step down. But many ultimately agree he is doing the proper, even courageous thing.

"He's a very frail man, his body is aging and I don't think (being pope) is something he could handle any more." says Nancy Oliver, a 73-year-old retired nurse. Like a lot of parishioners at a church that still has many German-Americans, she was excited when Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became pope eight years ago.

Frank Scharl, 72, agrees. Scharl, whose parents came from Bavaria and were married in the Church in 1930, said that just as German-American parishioners were proud when Pope Benedict assumed the papacy, they are proud of his decision to step down for health reasons.

"Who knows," Scharl says, "he might be a saint someday."

AN ARGENTINE POPE?

In Argentina, Benedict XVI's final moments as pope were followed closely by the faithful in Buenos Aires' downtown cathedral.

Leaving Mass, Raquel Gonzalez and her friend Zuni Gimenez paused to dip their fingers in holy water and make the sign of the cross on their chests, then on each other's backs for good measure.

"It would be good if he's an Argentine, but I what would please me is that the coming pope does some good in this world," Gonzalez said of her hopes for the next in line. "That he achieves peace, and persuades those living with so much wealth to share more of it with the poor."

Several dozen archdiocese employees in Baltimore were watching the television as Pope Benedict XVI headed into retirement. They applauded when he stepped outside at the Vatican, then watched in silence as his helicopter took off for Castel Gandolfo.

"It was wonderful he came to terms with the fact that this is a huge international corporation and he doesn't have the energy to run this corporation anymore," said Derek Coelho, the director of gift planning for Catholic Charities.

NEW SHOES

It's all about the shoes.

As Benedict XVI spends his final hours as pope, Mexican media are focused on the pontiff's footwear.

The Vatican said this week that Benedict would abandon his signature ruby red shoes in retirement and wear a comfortable brown pair he was given in the city of Leon when he visited Mexico last year. Leon is a renowned shoemaking center.

CROWDS DISAPPEAR

Minutes after the pope went back into the palace at Castel Gandolfo, the crowd of several thousand in the piazza outside has disappeared.

Many of the faithful have crammed into the two coffee bars on the square to warm up. Locals, meanwhile, headed home for dinner.

Swiss Guards are still standing at the entrance to the palace. But each is wearing a dark blue woolen mantle down to their knees over their colorful uniforms, trying to stay warm in the winter chill.

In less than 90 minutes, Pope Benedict XVI will be retired.

Benedict never visited Bolivia as pope, but impressed one bishop with his knowledge of the poor, landlocked South American nation.

The Rev. Eugenio Escarpellini is bishop of El Alto, a city at 13,000 feet (4,000 meters), where the elevation can put strain on the heart. He recalled meeting Benedict in Rome three years ago and, after telling him where he was from, hearing the pontiff ask, "How's your heart?"

"I was surprised at how knowledgeable he is," Escarpellini told Radio Fides.

Churches across Bolivia collected farewell messages for the pope in hundreds of ledgers and organized rosary-reciting sessions that were to last until a new pope is elected.

Even President Evo Morales, often critical of the Catholic hierarchy, had praise for the pontiff.

"We're not all alike, but the pope's questioning of humanity's problems has made me reflect and I express my solidarity," Morales said last week.

"Thank you, goodnight!" Benedict replied before going back inside the palace.

A few minutes later, aides came out on the balcony, pulled off the papal banner, rolled it up and brought it inside the palace. The glass doors to the balcony were quickly clicked shut and the white curtains behind them tightly drawn.

Within seconds, the crowd of a few thousand in the piazza dwindled to a few hundred.

Benedict XVI's elder brother says his final day as pontiff on Thursday was more of a private matter than his big send-off.

Monsignor Georg Ratzinger told Germany's RTL television at his home in Regensburg, Germany, that Wednesday's farewell in St. Peter's Square was "the most important day for me." He says it was Benedict XVI's last encounter with the faithful "and with that, the essential has actually already happened."

He said: "Today is more private, a sort of an accessory matter, at least according to my point of view."

Georg Ratzinger, who is 89, was ordained on the same day in 1951 as his brother, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

Americans try to reach WBC title game at last

The Japanese won the international tournament the first two times it was played, in 2006 and 2009, and has a reputation for preparing quite seriously for the event, while some nations will build their teams from players on break from spring training.

French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn lost his bid to have a court ban a kiss-and-tell book by an ex-lover who has described him as a sex-obsessed "half-man, half-pig" -- but he will collect damages.

In a ruling late Tuesday, a judge green-lighted publication of "Beauty and Beast" by Marcelle Iacub, a lawyer and columnist who had a seven-month affair with the former head of the International Monetary Fund, Le Monde reported.

The court agreed to Strauss-Kahn's demand that a disclaimer declaring his privacy had been invaded be included in every copy. It also ordered the author, the publisher and a magazine that printed excerpts to pay him $98,000, the newspaper said.

Hours before his partial victory, Strauss-Kahn appeared in a Paris courtroom to complain of the "horror" of having his love life exposed, The Guardian reported.

"Belle et Bete" ("Beauty and Beast") by Marcela Iacub details her seven-month affair with Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

"Is anything allowed in order to make money?" he asked, branding the book a cheap shot against "a man already down on the ground."

The affair chronicled in the book unfolded while Strauss-Kahn was embroiled in scandal over allegations he sexually assaulted a hotel maid in New York. Criminal charges were dropped by prosecutors who questioned the woman's credibility; Strauss-Kahn later settled a civil claim out of court.

Iacub's book, which is due to go on sale Wednesday, doesn't name Strauss-Kahn, but she has said it's about him. Excerpts published in Le Nouvel Observateur -- accompanied by an interview in which she referred to him as "half-man, half-pig" -- are decidedly unflattering.

"You were old, you were fat, you were short and you were ugly," the 48-year-old former mistress wrote, according to the Guardian. "You were macho, you were vulgar, you were insensitive and you were stingy. You were selfish, you were brutal and you had no culture. And I was mad about you."

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers contend he was seduced into a money-making trap and they tried to persuade the court with an email in which Iacub purportedly confessed the romance was a plot cooked up by her co-workers.

Iacub said she didn't remember the email, disavowed its contents and issued a warning to the Socialist leader once touted as presidential material before scandal doomed his career.

"I don't think it's in [Strauss-Kahn's] best interest for me to start searching through my emails," she said, according to London's Daily Telegraph.

Strauss-Kahn, who is under investigation in connection with a French sex ring, had asked for a disclaimer to be printed in every copy of "Beauty and Beast" already distributed, a ban on more copies being printed, and $130,000 in damages.?

As he left the courthouse, he said there was one more thing on his wish-list: "To be left alone."

Lost and Found: Ancient Shoes Turn Up in Egypt Temple

More than 2,000 years ago, at a time when Egypt was ruled by a dynasty of kings of Greek descent, someone, perhaps a group of people, hid away some of the most valuable possessions they had ? their shoes.

Seven shoes were deposited in a jar in an Egyptian temple in Luxor, three pairs and a single one. Two pairs were originally worn by children and were only about 7 inches (18 centimeters) long. Using palm fiber string, the child shoes were tied together within the single shoe (it was larger and meant for an adult) and put in the jar. Another pair of shoes, more than 9 inches (24 cm) long that had been worn by a limping adult, was also inserted in the jar.

The shoe-filled jar, along with two other jars, had been "deliberately placed in a small space between two mudbrick walls," writes archaeologist Angelo Sesana in a report published in the journal Memnonia.

Whoever deposited the shoes never returned to collect them, and they were forgotten, until now. [See Photos of the Ancient Egyptian Shoes]

In 2004, an Italian archaeological expedition team, led by Sesana, rediscovered the shoes. The archaeologists gave Andr? Veldmeijer, an expert in ancient Egyptian footwear, access to photographs that show the finds.

"The find is extraordinary as the shoes were in pristine condition and still supple upon discovery," writes Veldmeijer in the most recent edition of the Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt. Unfortunately after being unearthed the shoes became brittle and "extremely fragile," he added.

Pricey shoes

Veldmeijer's analysis suggests the shoes may have been foreign-made and were "relatively expensive." Sandals were the more common footwear in Egypt and that the style and quality of these seven shoes was such that "everybody would look at you," and "it would give you much more status because you had these expensive pair of shoes," said Veldmeijer, assistant director for Egyptology of the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo.

The date of the shoes is based on the jar they were found in and the other two ?jars, as well as the stratigraphy, or layering of sediments, of the area. It may be possible in the future to carbon date the shoes to confirm their age.

Why they were left in the temple in antiquity and not retrieved is a mystery. "There's no reason to store them without having the intention of getting them back at some point," Veldmeijer said in an interview with LiveScience, adding that there could have been some kind of unrest that forced the owners of the shoes to deposit them and flee hastily. The temple itself predates the shoes by more than 1,000 years and was originally built for pharaoh Amenhotep II (1424-1398 B.C.).

Design discoveries

Veldmeijer made a number of shoe design discoveries. He found that the people who wore the seven shoes would have tied them using what researchers call "tailed toggles." Leather strips at the top of the shoes would form knots that would be passed through openings to close the shoes. After they were closed a long strip of leather would have hung down, decoratively, at either side. The shoes are made out of leather, which is likely bovine.

Most surprising was that the isolated shoe had what shoemakers call a "rand," a device that until now was thought to have been first used in medieval Europe. A rand is a folded leather strip that would go between the sole of the shoe and the upper part, reinforcing the stitching as the "the upper is very prone to tear apart at the stitch holes," he explained. The device would've been useful in muddy weather when shoes are under pressure, as it makes the seam much more resistant to water.

In the dry (and generally not muddy) climate of ancient Egypt, he said that it's a surprising innovation and seems to indicate the seven shoes were constructed somewhere abroad.

Health discoveries

The shoes also provided insight into the health of the people wearing them. In the case of the isolated shoe, he found a "semi-circular protruding area" that could be a sign of a condition called Hallux Valgus, more popularly known as a bunion. [The 9 Most Bizarre Medical Conditions]

"In this condition, the big toe starts to deviate inward towards the other toes," Veldmeijer writes in the journal article. "Although hereditary, it can also develop as a result of close fitting shoes, although other scholars dispute this ...."

Another curious find came from the pair of adult shoes. He found that the left shoe had more patches and evidence of repair than the shoe on the right. "The shoe was exposed to unequal pressure," he said, showing that the person who wore it "walked with a limp, otherwise the wear would have been far more equal."

Veldmeijer hopes to have the opportunity to examine the shoes, now under the care of the Ministry of State for Antiquities, firsthand.

Highest Bidder Will Get DNA Pioneer's Nobel Medal

This is no ordinary family heirloom.

The granddaughter of English scientist Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA who passed away in 2004, is putting his Nobel Prize medal up on the auction block.

"It had been tucked away for so long," said Kindra Crick, 36, of the medal. "We really were interested in finding someone who could look after it, and possibly put it on display so it could inspire the next generation of scientists."

In 1953, Crick and his collaborator, James Watson, published their research into the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for all living things. Nine years later, in 1962, the pair (along with Maurice Wilkins, a New Zealand-born physicist and molecular biologist) shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for the achievement.

According to the website LiveScience, there is little precedent for the sale.

"Nobel medals appear to have changed hands publicly in only a couple of instances. This particular medal, like others made before 1980, is struck in 23-carat gold, and recognizes a particularly high-profile accomplishment in biology, one fundamental to modern genetics."

While the medal itself will clearly be the centerpiece of the April 10-11 sale at Heritage Auctions in New York City, other items will also be offered to the highest bidder, including a Nobel Prize diploma, the check from the Nobel Foundation for prize money in the amount of 85,739.88 Swedish krona (endorsed on the back by "Doctor Francis Crick"), a soiled lab coat worn by the famous scientist (embossed with a stylized DNA helix on the pocket), and a model of the DNA molecule built by Crick and Watson in 1953.

Heritage Auctions' Sandra Palomino has valued the medal and the diploma at $500,000, which she says is "an educated guesstimate."

The Crick family plans for a portion of the proceeds of the sale to benefit research institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom, including the Francis Crick Institute, scheduled to open in London in 2015.

A Senate majority takes 158 seats and no party has more than 123 at the moment. The current results look like this:

There are 315 total seats and the total above is only 301. Although 14 seats remain, not even a Monti-Bersani coalition in addition to those 14 seats would bring Bersani's total to 158.

Curiously, it appears Bersani received a plurality of the Senate popular vote with 32% compared to Berlusconi's 30.2%. Grillo weighs in with 23.9%, and Monti at 9.1%.

If 123-104 in favor of? Berlusconi over Bersani sounds strange, it is not unlike a presidential election in the US where one candidate wins the popular vote and another candidate wins the election based on? state-by-state electoral votes.

Chamber Comparison to US

In Italy, both houses of parliament share duties equally. In the US, financial bills originate in the House, and only the Senate has a say in approval of judges and cabinet-level positions.

The highly regarded maker of remote-computer-control software, LogMeIn, claims that its new file-cloud-syncing and online storage offering, Cubby, attracted more beta testers than any product in the company's history. And it's no wonder: Cubby is a delight to use, and offers all the simplicity, apps, and features you could want in such a service. Of course, it didn't hurt that the service was free with 5GB of online storage space. With the service's exit from beta, the free 5GB offer remains, but paying $6.99 a month ups that limit to 100GB and adds collaboration and more management and security features.

Cubby goes beyond the standard folder-syncing services such as Dropbox, Box, SugarSync, and SkyDrive, which keep all your files accessible at all times, using cloud storage. Cubby's twist on the genre makes storage limits a moot point: Its DirectSync feature lets you sync between your own separate computers without taking up space on Cubby's servers. (Unfortunately, this feature is now only available in paid Pro accounts.) But perhaps most important among the new service's claims is that it offers the best middle ground between simplicity and powerful features?"Your digital happy place," is Cubby's motto, and I tend to agree with it. Something you don't get with Cubby, though is device syncing for settings and such, like you get with Apple iCloud, Google Drive, and Microsoft Skydrive.

Signup and Setup
In addition to the free 5GB storage, Cubby still offers a referral program that gets you an extra 1GB for each user you get to sign up, up to a maximum of 25GB. SugarSync actually has a higher cap on referral bonuses, at 32GB and unlimited if your friends sign up for paid accounts. The 100GB you get with a $6.99-a-month Pro account is generous by industry standards, but be aware that that price is prepaid annually?not actually monthly.

Cubby has one of the friendliest setup processes I've seen. After you download and run the tiny 4MB installer, you're greeted with an attractively designed box with a single "get started" button. The small box serves as the desktop interface for all Cubby activities, and there's no need for a full-screen app. Now comes signup: All you need is an email address and password (Cubby ensures your password is strong, too). You can't use Cubby without downloading the desktop client, unlike some services such as SkyDrive.

Using Cubby
The desktop program for most syncing services, such as SugarSync, Google Drive, SkyDrive, and FileLocker are simply agents that place an icon in your system tray, show you sync status, and link to your synced folders. Cubby's desktop app is a bit richer, offering new folder syncing via drag and drop, sharing, and the creation of Web links to the folder or file.

Like Dropbox, Cubby creates a master folder whose contents are synced across all your devices. As with any subsequent syncing folders you create, this is called a "cubby." To create a new cubby, you drag and drop any folder in your system onto the Cubby desktop app. It will be synced, too?but the folder's original location won't be moved. This is a fantastic solution to the dilemma of syncing services: Should there be a single synced folder all of whose subfolders get synced, too, or should you let the user sync any folder wherever it is on the hard drive? Two of our Editors' Choice folder-syncing services, SugarSync and Dropbox, show the extremes of each approach. Dropbox has one box, for the ultimate simplicity. SugarSync has great controls for syncing only what you want, so it's more complicated. But Cubby deftly combines the flexibility of SugarSync with the simplicity of Dropbox.

Cubby helpfully marks any synced folders' icons with its green C logo in Windows Explorer. And right-clicking on any folder entry offers just one simple choice: "Make this folder a cubby"?far more straightforward than many other syncing services, such as FileLocker, which has four choices, some with subchoices. For already-Cub-ified folders, you get two simple choices: share now and public link. Choosing the first opens the desktop app, and if the folder is non-cloud synced, you'll be asked if you want to turn that on. Clicking a cubby opens its Windows Explorer window?just as it should.

For Pro accounts, Cubby also has "cloud on" and "cloud off" options on your synced folders. The "on" choice means you'll be able to share live Web links to a cubby and get mobile access to it. The other option is DirectSync, which has the advantage of having no storage cap. ?New cubbies you create are "cloud on" by default, but the checkbox-and-cloud icon lets you easily change this setting, after a confirmation. You could certainly use this feature as a backup system if you have two machines running Cubby at separate locations. But if you try to switch the Cloud off for a folder and you're using a free account, you'll just get a message prompting you to upgrade. Since it doesn't cost the vendor anything, I find this kind of arbitrary.

One of the very few slightly confusing notes in Cubby appeared after I'd already turned off the cloud for a folder: The tooltip for the X button to the right of the folder read "remove this cubby from the cloud." This really just meant the folder would be removed from any Cubby syncing. I was surprised that the main My Cubby was fair game for this remove?a nice show of flexibility. Another very slightly confusing element was that I couldn't drag a folder onto a cubby, but when I double-clicked on the cubby to open its Windows Explorer window, I could easily drop in a subfolder. A drawback to this method, though, is that the subfolder didn't stay in place on my folder structure but was copied or moved to the Cubby folder. If, however, the Cubby-ized folder already has subfolders, they remain intact in their original locations, and get synced.

'Sequester' on president's agenda at meeting with governors

President Barack Obama on Monday is expected to implore the nation's governors to put pressure on Congress to avoid the sequester as Obama speaks to the nation's governors at the White House.

Members of the Obama administration, heads of federal agencies and others have been issuing severe warnings to Congress regarding the sequester-- $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts that will go into effect March 1 absent a budget. Warnings have been released threatening fewer responders to handle wildfires, reduced food safety inspection, less help for vulnerable Americans and on Friday, widespread flight delays and cancellations.

"Travelers should expect delays. Flights to major cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and others could experience delays up to 90 minutes during peak hours, because we have fewer controllers on staff. Delays in these major airports will ripple across the country," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters at Friday's White House press briefing after announcing that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans massive furloughs and closing air traffic control towers if the sequester goes into effect.

The White House on Sunday night released state-by-state reports detailing what they say would be "devastating" impacts on each state as a result of the sequester, but the?topic of the sequester was notably absent from Obama's speech Sunday night to the governors, who are in town for the National Governors Association's (NGA) annual winter meeting.

Instead, the president at the White House dinner struck an appreciative tone, commending the governors for steering their states through tough times.

Democratic Gov. Jack Markell of Delaware, chair of the NGA, followed Obama's address Sunday night by emphasizing the absence of politics from the night's celebration. "On this one night it?s a relief -- politics doesn?t drive the conversation. We don?t speak of partisan issues or presidential aspirations," Markell said.

But Markell did note the sequester.

"One thing for sure is certain -- you don?t let issues fester.? You get to deal with education and health care, and even the sequester," Markell said to laughter and applause from the audience.

Republicans such as Speaker John Boehner have publicly stated their opposition to the sequester, though others have threatened they are willing to let it go into effect.

Some Republicans over the weekend continued to accuse the administration of exaggerating the sequester's impact.

"They have plenty of flexibility in terms of discretion on how they spend money. There are easy ways to cut this money that the American people will never feel," Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said on Fox News Sunday.

The president is slated to address the governors at 11:05 a.m. ET from the White House State Dining Room. Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden are also scheduled to speak.

?Can you say that?more academically?? I hear myself asking a student and pointing to a specific passage. She is writing an analytical essay, and there is a shift in the tone of her writing. She has slipped from the learned, written language of the institution, into her own dialect. I am reluctant, because I do not want her to think that her ideas are not clear. But, I tell her anyway, knowing that she?d thank me for the better grade if it came to that.

Basic linguistic theory tells us that within the educational system, access and continued desire for access based on propensity for success is based on socioeconomic status, which is, in turn, based on the degree to which the social dialect adheres to standardized English. Basil Bernstein demonstrates this by evaluating the use of ?elaborate? and ?restrictive codes? in speech. Middle class children are more likely to use elaborate codes, which is the code preferred by the schools. Elaborate codes provide contextual information, while restrictive codes are context specific. Restrictive codes used by working-class children are judged by the educational system as inadequate; they do not provide the contextual information that the institution seeks, despite that they may be communicating the same information.

Linguistic problems are societal problems?the disparity between social dialects and standardized English reinforces social inequality. Bloomfield argues that social hierarchy mimics the linguistic hierarchy: ?The higher the social position of the non-standard speaker, the more nearly does he approach the standard language.? The student is ranked based upon her capacity to adhere to standardized English, her fluency in the language of power.

With this knowledge in mind, I advise my student to make changes to her paper. I tell her, ?What you have here is OK, and your message has been communicated. I get it. But, here, now and in your future as a student, you will be expected to speak ?academically.?? I wonder, should I tell her that this is the language of patriarchy, or that speaking academically is active in the maintenance of social inequality? That she, as a minority, will have to adopt the language of the majority in order to be a social success?

Instead, I walk the fine line of helping the student to remain true to her social identity, while also doing the best that I can to provide her with tools needed to reconcile this identity with the language of the academy.

Graphene: A material that multiplies the power of light

Feb. 24, 2013 ? Bottles, packaging, furniture, car parts... all made of plastic. Today we find it difficult to imagine our lives without this key material that revolutionized technology over the last century. There is wide-spread optimism in the scientific community that graphene will provide similar paradigm shifting advances in the decades to come. Mobile phones that fold, transparent and flexible solar panels, extra thin computers... the list of potential applications is endless.

The most recent discovery published in Nature Physics and made by researchers at the Institute of Photonic Science (ICFO), in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Germany, and Graphenea S.L. Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain, demonstrate that graphene is able to convert a single photon that it absorbs into multiple electrons that could drive electric current (excited electrons) -- a very promising discovery that makes graphene an important alternative material for light detection and harvesting technologies, now based on conventional semiconductors like silicon.

"In most materials, one absorbed photon generates one electron, but in the case of graphene, we have seen that one absorbed photon is able to produce many excited electrons, and therefore generate larger electrical signals" explains Frank Koppens, group leader at ICFO. This feature makes graphene an ideal building block for any device that relies on converting light into electricity. In particular, it enables efficient light detectors and potentially also solar cells that can harvest light energy from the full solar spectrum with lower loss.

The experiment consisted in sending a known number of photons with different energies (different colors) onto a monolayer of graphene. "We have seen that high energy photons (e.g. violet) are converted into a larger number of excited electrons than low energy photons (e.g. infrared). The observed relation between the photon energy and the number of generated excited electrons shows that graphene converts light into electricity with very high efficiency. Even though it was already speculated that graphene holds potential for light-to-electricity conversion, it now turns out that it is even more suitable than expected!" explains Tielrooij, researcher at ICFO.

Although there are some issues for direct applications, such as graphene's low absorption, graphene holds the potential to cause radical changes in many technologies that are currently based on conventional semiconductors. "It was known that graphene is able to absorb a very large spectrum of light colors. However now we know that once the material has absorbed light, the energy conversion efficiency is very high. Our next challenge will be to find ways of extracting the electrical current and enhance the absorption of graphene. Then we will be able to design graphene devices that detect light more efficiently and could potentially even lead to more efficient solar cells." concludes Koppens.

Sprint LTE also live in parts of Florida, New York City and Washington, DC (updated)

Sprint was clearly up to something good when we noticed LTE in parts of San Francisco. It turns out that this was just the tip of the iceberg -- the carrier has since confirmed that it's also flicking the switch in New York City, parts of New York state, Washington DC, and Florida cities that include Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa. The faster access is going live on a site-by-site basis in given areas rather than all at once, which bears out what we're hearing from readers and a Sprint spokesperson we reached for comment: LTE appears to be available in pockets in at least New York City and San Francisco. Sprint won't have a formal news release until it believes the coverage is complete, but we suspect most customers will be too busy testing the speed of their long-underused EVO 4G LTE or iPhone 5 to notice.

What's New: It's hard to believe that the Cayman is just 8 years old, having been sold in the U.S. since 2006. This new version brings the midengine hardtop in line with the new lightweight architecture and electrical systems introduced on last year's 911 and Boxster models. It means the new Cayman has electronically assisted steering and a wide range of options including adaptive cruise control (which maintains the distance from the vehicle in front), a Bose or Burmester sound system, and a factory-installed keyless entry system.

The third generation of Porsche's baby coupe will be built at the VW Karmann plant in Osnabr?ck, Germany, following Volkswagen's purchase of Porsche. It gets an all-new chassis, which has grown to 172.4 inches in length, an increase of 1.3 inches over the outgoing model with a corresponding 2.4-inch wheelbase stretch. A wider front track?1.4 inches for the Cayman and 1.6 inches for the S?along with small increases to the rear track reinforces the Cayman's wheel-at-each-corner impression. The roof is lower and the aluminum-and-steel construction gives a 14 percent weight reduction, trimming about 66 pounds, depending on configuration.

Both flat-six quad-cam engines are largely unchanged. As before, both the Cayman and Cayman S have a 10 hp advantage over the corresponding Boxster model. The base engine is downsized but performance gets a small hike, with the downsized 2.7-liter capable of a 5.1-second 0 to 60 time with the PDK Sport Chrono package (which includes launch control), or 5.4 seconds with the manual transmission.

Tech Tidbit: About 44 percent of the new Cayman's body is aluminum, including the doors, tailgate, hood, and floors. The rest is a mix of high-strength and mild steels. Torsional stiffness of the body shell increases from the outgoing model's 30,110 to 40,500 Nm/deg. For comparison, the equivalent Boxster boasts just 17,000 Nm/deg.

Driving Character: The Cayman looks and drives a lot like the Boxster; that's always been the case, and that's a good thing. The longer wheelbase has allowed a bit more room in the cabin and the driving position is lower and more laid-back as a result. The cabin is beautifully put together, although there are unsightly stretch marks from where Porsche wraps the leather upholstery around precision-fit cutouts for racing belts in the seats. We'd also question whether an electronic handbrake is suitable for a sport coupe.

The driver gets a traditional three-dial instrument cluster with engine rpm in the large center dial and a digital speedo within, an analog speedometer to the left, and a multifunction digital display on the right. The center console has buttons for sport settings on the gearbox and the optional active damping, sport exhaust, and traction control. The Cayman is comfortable and classy, and while there's not a lot of storage room, the front and rear trunks have a combined capacity of 15 cubic feet?more than enough for a long weekend for two.

Fire up the flat six and the unmistakable guttural roar comes to life. The 2.7-liter is more rev-happy than the 3.4-liter in the Cayman S, which has a more measured but more powerful throttle response. As the revs climb, the exhausts beat sonorously together, merging as the needle approaches and passes 7000 rpm. Full-throttle acceleration, of course, is pretty darn fast, but the beauty of the Cayman is that you don't need to drive like a maniac to go fast or to enjoy its excellent responses.

The six-speed manual transmission, with perfectly spaced gear ratios, is pure joy. But most buyers (up to 75 percent) choose the clever dual-clutch, seven-speed PDK gearbox. It adds 66 pounds and costs an extra $3200, but it allows faster and more accurate shifts without a hint of slop or the trouble of using a clutch. But it's far too easy to leave the PDK gearbox in Drive. Changing gears in a manual-transmission Cayman is one of life's great treats.

So is turning a Cayman's steering wheel. The new electronically assisted helm is one of the best in the business, even if we're second-guessing whether the feedback is real or what the electronics think you want to feel. That said, the Cayman responds to the well-weighted steering inputs with a telepathic ease; the car will carve through a series of turns faster than you can say doppelkupplungsgetriebe. When it finally relinquishes grip, it does it in a balanced drift, though you need to be quick and accurate with the steering corrections if the tail does fly out.

The ride is firm but comfortable in standard trim. The adaptive damping hardens things up uncomfortably on bumpy roads, but gives better body control on the track. The optional Sport Chrono package includes adaptive transmission mounts, which make the connection between the drivetrain and the body shell more rigid. It's an effective system, but too crude and uncomfortable for use on the road.

Favorite Detail: Where the first Cayman had a my-first-Porsche appearance, this third incarnation is almost perfect, with balanced lines, a lower and flatter roof, and smaller body overhangs. While Porsche claims the Cayman is a distinct model, we think it looks like a mini 911 and is none the worse for it.

Driver's Grievance: Did this car really need a sport exhaust, especially one that costs $2825? In standard trim the exhaust note is sporting but nicely muted. Press the sport-exhaust button and the rasping note fills the cabin, which is fun for about 5 minutes. Save your money.

Bottom Line: Truly, the bottom line here is the bottom line. At a starting price of $53,550, the Cayman is something of a bargain, but if you want bells and whistles, you'd better know where to stop. Ceramic brakes are $7400, adaptive dampers $1790, torque vectoring $1320, the Sport Chrono package $1850, and sport exhaust $2825. Add in $4690 for the infotainment/Bose surround sound, $710 for metallic paint, and $3200 for the PDK gearbox, and you've blown almost $76,500 on a base-model 2.7-liter Cayman. In no sense is that a poor-man's Porsche.

But if you take the standard car, add a couple of thoughtful additions, and then throw it up the road with some big brave turns, you'll be the king of the hill in a car that will out-handle most cars that cost twice as much, all while putting a big smile on your face. The old Cayman was close to perfect. Somehow, the new car is whole lot better.
