Church Bombings Mar Christmas for Nigerian Christians

Christmas Day was marred for Nigerian Christians after a series of church bombings killed at least 35 and wounded dozens more. In a suburb of Nigeria's capital, Abuja, more than 30 worshipers died at St. Theresa Catholic Church as they left Christmas mass.

Analysts largely agree that the bombings were an attempt by Boko Haram, a radical Islamist group in northern Nigeria, to stoke simmering tensions between Muslims and Christians, which evenly divide Africa's most populous nation of 160 million. Last year, dozens died in Christmas Eve bombings around Jos.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) warned that such attacks might provoke a "religious war."

"Enough is enough," said CAN secretary general Saidu Dogo. "We shall henceforth in the midst of these provocations and wanton destruction of innocent lives and property be compelled to make our own efforts and arrangements to protect the lives of innocent Christians and peace-loving citizens of this country."

CT reported on more Nigerian Christians abandoning the practice of "turning the other cheek" earlier this December, and has extensively covered Nigeria's long-standing religious conflict.

Kucinich opposing veteran Democrat in Ohio primary (AP)

TOLEDO, Ohio ? Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich (koo-SIH'-nich) says he's sticking with his plan to run against fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a U.S. House primary contest that will pit two veteran lawmakers against each other.

Kucinich had spent the last few weeks mulling whether to run against Kaptur or seek another seat in Cleveland after the Ohio Legislature approved a new congressional district map.

The new map gave Kaptur a bigger chunk of her current district in the Toledo area, leading to speculation that Kucinich might run against Rep. Marcia Fudge instead.

Kucinich said Wednesday that he will he file to run against Kaptur in a district that hugs the Lake Erie shoreline from Cleveland to Toledo.

The winner of the March primary will be heavily favored to win the seat.

Three Tennessee miners rescued after fire (Reuters)

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) ? Three miners were trapped underground by smoke for several hours on Wednesday before being brought safely to the surface at the Young zinc mine in Tennessee, authorities said.

Two other miners were taken to a local hospital suffering from minor smoke inhalation after a drill rig caught fire at the mine in New Market, Tennessee, Fire Department Captain Sammy Solomon said.

Fifty-four miners were in the zinc mine when the rig caught fire about 800 feet from the surface, and 51 of them were able to walk out of the mine, Solomon said.

"They are on the surface, they are on the ground. They are officially out," Solomon said just before 4 p.m. local time, adding that they appeared to be fine.

A team from state-run Tennessee Mine Rescue led the trapped miners safely to the surface. The miners had been talking with authorities at the surface by phone after the fire broke out. The fire call came in about 1 p.m.

Solomon, who has been a captain of the volunteer fire and rescue unit for more than 20 years, said a mine fire was almost unheard of in New Market, a town about 15 miles north of Knoxville in eastern Tennessee.

"This is the first time it's ever happened that I could ever remember," Solomon said.

Nyrstar, which owns the Jefferson County mine and has operations around the world, said in a statement that it was working with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and mine rescue teams to ensure that it was safe to resume mining.

Jefferson County is one of four counties in Tennessee with active zinc mining and milling operations that make it the nation's second-largest zinc producer, according to state data.

Globe-trotting turtle returns to sea after long rehab

A world-traveling sea turtle found stranded in the Netherlands is back home in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after three long years of rest and rehabilitation.

The animal, an endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, was found frigid and near-dead off the coast of the Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from the Gulf waters these turtles call home. It was dubbed Johnny Vasco de Gama by its European rescuers.

Marine biologists suspect Johnny became caught in cold currents and was "cold-stunned," a condition that shuts down internal organs and can kill sea turtles. Staff members of the Rotterdam Zoo stabilized the ailing turtle and sent him to the Ocean?rio de Lisboa aquarium in Portugal the following summer.

After rehabilitation there, Johnny flew in a specially adapted plane back across the Atlantic to Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida. Today scientists there released the well-traveled turtle back into the sea.

"He did just fine," Mote spokesman Hayley Rutger told LiveScience.

Johnny is fitted with a satellite tag that will help researchers keep an eye on his next amazing journey. Mote has tracked more than 120 sea turtles since 2005, according to Tony Tucker, the head of the laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program.

"By tracking Johnny, we'll obtain a rare look at how rehabbed turtles reorient in the wild," Tucker said in a statement. "Fortunately, we can compare this turtle to other wild Kemp's ridleys being tracked currently by Mote and other institutions around the Gulf."
